strengthening youth and communities through the power of sports

About Us

Team-Up for Youth believes that all kids deserve the chance to develop healthy bodies, sharp minds and strong spirits.  Unfortunately, kids in low-income communities face barriers to such positive growth.  That’s why Team-Up utilizes the transformative power of sports to help kids in these communities become healthy, strong and self-assured.

Why We’re Unique

Sports can transform a kid’s life.  Quality sports programs allow kids to connect with caring adults, play positively with others and learn new skills.  These programs can also offer important lessons of leadership, competition and risk-taking.  In addition to the social and emotional benefits, sports programs also get kids physically active—a significant step in addressing the steep rise of childhood obesity rates and ensuring a lifelong love of physical activity.

What We Do

Thousands of Bay Area kids in low-income areas—especially youth girls—face obstacles that prevent them from enjoying the benefits of quality sports and physical activity programs.  Barriers include steep fees for organized leagues, neglected fields and gyms and lack of trained coaches.  With schools cutting back on physical education and sports teams, many kids are completely shut out of organized sports.

Team-Up’s unique approach overcomes barriers and creates opportunities.  We work with community-based organizations to expand and improve after-school sports programs in those neighborhoods where the need is greatest.

Our programs provide training and technical assistance; award grants; recruit, train and place coaches; promote gender equity; and inform public policy.  The breadth and depth of what we do help to remove barriers and create opportunities.

We inspire vision, supply focus and lend support so that thousands of kids across the Bay Area can grow socially, emotionally and physically through the power of sports.
