physical_activity

Young people’s physical development is an essential component of their overall healthy development. Physical activity helps young people build strong bones, muscles and hearts and helps prevent chronic diseases associated with sedentary lifestyles. Fun and engaging sports programs keep kids interested and helps them develop lifelong healthy habits.

Frequent

  • Practices should be held at least twice a week for at least 1 ˝ hours each

Moderate to Vigorous

  • All kids are moving with moderate to vigorous activity over the course of the practice
Example: Drills involve all players so there is not a lot of waiting and standing in line
  • Children and youth with special healthcare issues, such as asthma, diabetes, and obesity, are supported to participate in sports to the best of their abilities
Example: Coaches send a form home at the beginning of the season asking parents/guardians if their child has any special healthcare issues

Varied

  • Youth participate in diverse physical activities
Example: Coaches emphasize varied forms of fitness (aerobic, strength, flexibility etc)
  • Physical activity is introduced slowly with the intensity increased gradually
  • Programs offer a range of sports and varied practices so young people find the right fit and stay interested
Example: Coaches encourage young players to play different positions
