Girls Sports Day connected 100 girls with low-cost summer programs in their neighborhood.

Team-Up for Youth is committed to achieving gender equity in youth sports programs, with a special focus on increasing the participation of low-income girls. Low-income girls in the urban Bay Area make up less than a quarter of participants in sports programs. And adolescent girls drop out of sports at a rate double that of boys.

While girls in suburban neighborhoods are participating in after-school sports at an unprecedented rate, girls of color in urban areas are left on the sidelines. Team-Up has focused on improving and expanding sports programming for girls in low-income communities through grantmaking, education and training, and public policy. In 2007, we hosted girls sports trainings, published an article in the AfterSchool Review about girls' participation and retention, and held special seminars on gender issues related to youth sports for our partner organizations.
