Team-Up’s Neighborhood Sports Initiative (formerly the Community Sports Organizing Project) employs a neighborhood-based strategy to support the healthy development of young people in low-income neighborhoods in San Francisco and Alameda counties by increasing the quality, capacity and community support for out-of-school youth sports.
Addressing gaps in access to out-of-school sports The Neighborhood Sports Initiative addresses significant gaps in access to out-of-school sports for children and youth in low-income communities, including: lack of programs; uneven quality in existing activities; low participation rates of girls; limited engagement of parents, neighborhood members and institutions; and inadequate and unsafe facilities.
Partnering for quality, accessibility, and variety of sports programs Through partnerships with neighborhood organizations, Team-Up works to expand the quality, accessibility, and variety of out-of-school sports programs and facilities in low-income neighborhoods. Team-Up provides funding, technical assistance and other support to a Lead Agency in each neighborhood. Each Lead Agency uses an inclusive, collaborative process to plan and implement a local approach to youth sports.
Making children, youth and neighborhoods stronger Over the five-year project, six neighborhoods will participate in the Neighborhood Sports Initiative, convening a broad array of individuals and organizations to work together to strengthen children, youth and their neighborhoods through the power of sports.
Working toward common goals Each neighborhood involved in Team-Up’s Neighborhood Sports Initiative has its own vision for youth sports in their community. However, all sites work toward three main goals: - Youth sports programs in low-income neighborhoods are high quality and successfully apply youth development principles.
- Children and youth in low-income communities participate in high quality youth sports programs that fully engage girls, children and youth of all athletic abilities, and a diversity of young people.
- A broad cross-section of organizations and individuals support and sustain high-quality youth sports programs.
